The 12 English Tenses

Grammar is an important rule of languages around the world. Without proper grammar, there will be misunderstanding in the conversation and writing. In English, there are 12 basic tenses involving in everyday use. Those tenses are listed as below:

NOTE:

  • Verb 1: Present
  • Verb 2: Past
  • Verb 3: Past Participle

1. Present Simple

Form: Subject + Verb1 + Object

Example 1: I eat noodle everyday.

Example 2: She goes to school everyday.

2. Past Simple

Form: Subject + Verb2 + Object

Example 1: I ate noodle yesterday.

Example 2: She went to school yesterday.

3. Future Simple

Form: Subject + Will+Verb1 + Object

Example 1: I will eat noodle tomorrow.

Example 2: She will go to school tomorrow.

4. Present Continuous/Progressive 

Form: Subject + is/are/am + (verb1+ing )+ Object

Example 1: I am eating noodle right now.

Example 2: She is going to school right now.

5. Past Continuous/Progressive

Form: Subject + was/were + (verb1+ing )+ Object

Example 1: I was eating noodle when you arrived.

Example 2: She was going to school tomorrow when you arrived.

6. Future Continuous/Progressive

Form: Subject + will be + (verb1+ing )+ Object

Example 1: I will be eating noodle when you arrive.

Example 2: She will be going to school when you arrive.

7. Present Perfect

Form: Subject + have/has + verb3 + Object

Example 1: I have eaten all of the noodle.

Example 2: She has gone to school.

8. Past Perfect

Form: Subject + had + verb3 + Object

Example 1: I had eaten all of the noodle when you arrived.

Example 2: She had gone to school when you arrived.

9. Future Perfect

Form: Subject + will + have + verb3 + Object

Example 1: I will have eaten all of the noodle by the time you arrive.

Example 2: She will have gone to school by the time you arrive.

10. Present Perfect Continuous/Progressive 

Form: Subject + have/has been + (verb+ing) + Object

Example 1: I have been eating noodle for one hour.

Example 2: She has been going to school for one hour.

 

11. Past Perfect Continuous/Progressive 

Form: Subject + had been + (verb+ing) + Object

Example 1: I had been eating noodle for one hour when you arrived.

Example 2: She had been going to school for one hour when you arrived.

12. Future Perfect Continuous/Progressive 

Form: Subject + will have been + (verb+ing) + Object

Example 1: I will have been eating all of the noodle for one hour when you arrive.

Example 2: She will have been going to school for one hour when you arrive.
